During the Civil War the control of the Mississippi River was a very important objective. The Union Army used it move troops and supplies up and down the river. These federal barges, boats and steamships were harassed by the Confederates. At one point the Confederates halted all transports from being able to use the Mississippi River. The Union responded by sending an overwhelming number of soldiers to drive the southern soldiers from the river banks.
