William Grant Still attended the New England Conservatory of music and the Oberlin Conservatory of music. He wrote operas, ballet, symphonies and musical poems. William was the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra. William combined African-American and European music. Most people thought African-American people couldn't compose or play serious music. He proved them wrong.
