James Oglethorpe founded the state of Georgia in 1733. It was named after King George the Second. People who could not pay their debts in England were sent there to live and work. Twenty-one trustees ran Georgia's government and James Ogelthorpe was the governor. Ogelthorpe did not like slavery, so it was originally banned in Georgia. When Oglethorpe left Georgia in 1750, slavery was then permitted.
