Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)

This act allowed the American territories of Kansas and Nebraska the right to decide for themselves if the areas would be slave areas or not. The popular vote, by the people living in these areas, would determine slavery issues. Many northerners opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The debate of the act led to the creation of the Republican Party in 1854. This act was so controversial that violence occurred in Kansas.
