Homestead Act
Genre: Encyclopedia
By encyclo
 2 of 5

The Homestead Act of 1862 offered 160 acres in the west to anyone, with a $10.00 filing fee, willing to live on and farm the 160 acres for five years. Anyone could purchase more land for $1.25 an acre. The Homestead Act was instrumental in the settling of the west. The act could not get through Congress before secession because of opposition from southern senators, who feared that homesteaders would gain political clout and add their voices to the call for abolition.
