Peter Cooper (February 12, 1791 - April 4, 1883)

Peter Cooper was an American inventor and industrialist. Peter was born on February 12, 1791, in New York City.

Cooper worked for a coachmaker as an apprentice. Then he became involved in the cloth-shearing industry manufacturing and selling machines. Later he started a successful glue factory. Then he started the Canton iron works in Baltimore where he designed the first steam powered locamotive in 1830. He called it "Tom Thumb". He oversaw the production of the first structural iron beams in 1854.

Cooper patented instant gelatine which later turned into Jello.In 1876 he ran in the presidential election as a member of the Greenback Party.

He died on April 4, 1883.
